Old Chogoene Hotel
I went there in 1970 with my family. It was a beautiful hotel in the middle of nowhere. I remember travelling for hours on end on dirt roads before arriving. The sea was beautiful. At low tide we would snorkel in the reef or climb onto the shipwreck. I wonder what happened to it?
It was quite emotional to see the photo above. What a pity it's all run down and abbandoned!
Old Chongoene Hotel Reply
Hi Gail,
I would love to have been able to see the old Chongoene Hotel in it's glory days - it must have been quite something. A pity that shipwreck is no longer there.
If you do manage to find that old postcard please will you see if you can have it scanned and post it on the site.
All the best, and thanks for your comment.
Kind regards
David
OLD CHONGOENE HOTEL
My parents and I travelled by train from Bulawayo to LM on two occasions and travelled by 'unsafe bus' to the old Chongoene Hotel. That was in April/May 1971 and 1972. We used to stay for 4 weeks. I made a Diary the first time we went (I was 13 years old)and have a postcard picture the Hotel in its hayday. Must look for it, plus the menus and everything. Wonderful days. There was an old shipwreck about 1km north from the Hotel and we used to spend many a happy hour rummaging through the ship - my mom and I.
